This happens a lot when discovering new bands in the extreme metal scene.
Are they actual Satanists? Or just humanist and atheist?
Sadly it’s about 50/50 sex offenders and racists vs anti-establishment
I’d say more like 20/80 but maybe I just don’t listen to subgenres racists like.
Went to Roadburn for the first time this year, best fest I’ve ever been to by far, on every level. LOTS of queer folks having a blast and not a single dubious shirt or tattoo in sight.
As for mainstream stuff I’ve been to every Hellfest (FR) for like 15 years. Punk and stoner/weird music stages are obviously pretty chill, although they keep booking fucking Phil Anselmo. Death and black metal stages are OK for the most part, but some old school black metal bands draw out a rather dubious crowd. I assume they crawl out from their cave just for these sets as I don’t spot them anywhere else. I usually avoid the main stages, but when I go and there’s an asshole it’s usually a drunk tourist, not a metalhead.
It’s definitely about subgenres. I mean in general real bigots are a minority. But I know certain niche subgenres are famous for being populated by Nazis. And there’s been more than a few sex scandals.
That’s disappointing.
There’s that norwegian guy who burned down some churches, but he’s also a nazi.

Norwegian black metal has a really weird history.
If you find a controversy page on some Christian pastor, then you know you’ll need eye bleach after.

I heard a story about 30 years ago. I don’t know how true it is. But a bunch of metal bands were asked if they worshiped the devil. Most of them said no, it’s all just an act, it’s what people expect so they give them a show.
One band, Deicide, said yes. Who knows if they were being serious, but one of them admitted to it. These days I don’t think that’s much of a bad thing. Between Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan, and The Satanic Temple, you have some decent Satanists out there. Everyone who cares about Satanism owes it to themselves to see what these two organisations are all about.

These guys are pretty decent. And TST has spread pretty much globally.
Yeah, it’s my understanding that while The Church of Satan, Anton LaVey’s group based out of San Francisco, exists more as a parody of Christianity. But, it has these Eleven Rules I like (though, some sound like they were written by a bona fide edgelord, like “if someone disrespects you in your lair you must destroy them”), like “do not harm children” and “do not attempt to mate with someone who has not given the mating signal” (also edgy but also anti-SA).
And that TST is more politically aligned with Atheists and others who are not members of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
To put a finer point on it, The Satanic Temple is a human rights org dressed in its enemies’ outfit (to keep the anti-corruption theme at the forefront, etc.) as a “religion”.
TCoS is a shit project by a clearly unwell person and his similarly-affected sycophants. It can fuck right off.
TST is fighting the Good fight every goddamned day, neighbors. Go have a look, and see for yourself. I’m confident you’ll find a decent reason or three to toss them a few bucks here and there, at least.🩶
No one should let their loved ones hang out with churchy livestock-adjacent humans. Satanists, though? They’re often quite lovely people in their own rights, and won’t be scheming how to best worm their bullshit into said loved ones’ minds. 🤘🏼
