          Back in the day (17th, 18th century) there were so abundant they just washed up on shore and were used as cheap food for the poor, servants and prisoners. Things changed when lobsters were transported inland with trains.

          It used to be considered such a ‘trash food’ fit only for the pathetically poor that there were actually servant employment contracts that limited the amount of lobster the Master of the House was allowed to feed his staff.

          Now, that’s largely independent of the taste, mind you. It was more that the Victorians considered any bottom-feeder seafood to be nigh unfit for eating.
