    A great movie with an even greater soundtrack:

    Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. All of the TOS movies have great soundtracks, but The Voyage Home’s score stands out among them. Just that title track, that plays over a flat shot of the fore credits over a starry sky, is this high energy, multi-movement overture that’s more exciting than all Star Trek media made after 2008. We used to have potential as a species.

    A shit movie with a legitimately good soundtrack:

    Flashdance, of 1983. To quote Todd In The Shadows, “What most people remember about that movie is water, then Maniac right after that, and then about six hours of boring, and then What A Feeling.”

    Maximum Overdrive

    It’s all AC/DC [the album version is Who Made Who], but, they’re pretty much all bangers with a couple originals for the movie.

    Pirates of the Caribbean. The plot, characters, actors, and effects are fine enough. Specifically the plot is bland; it’s deliberately a hodgepodge of everything piratey tossed into a blender. Johnny Depp’s performance is excellent, but more because it feels the script was shaped around his eccentric dude persona rather than them stretching their skills. None of this makes the film bad just mediocre.

    … but the score is a masterpiece. Instantly iconic, filled with layered motifs, carries the sense of adventure and perfectly shapes the mood of each scene. Both catchy enough to become an earworm, but orchestral and textured enough that it’s not unwelcome as one.

    Cutthroat Island (1995). The movie bombed the box-office so bad that the entire swashbuckling genre died out for several years, until the first Pirates of the Caribbean film in 2003.

    The soundtrack, however, is one of the best of the genre

      I saw this rather long retrospective on Pirates of the Caribbean that mentioned Cutthroat Island as the last big pirate movie attempted. The funny thing is, the narrator was talking over footage from the movie, which looked fine. The montage of scenes he put together looked well shot, high production value…yeah the movie’s terrible.
