Nothing too serious, i want to hear your petty, your eccentric, your off beat takes.
Whoever invented jetskis and didn’t call them boatorcycles seriously fucked up
They were originally called Water scooters
I now can’t help but completely agree, that would have been so much better
I guess this hot take depends on the audience… But if you don’t have bay leaves on hand for a recipe, your family and friends aren’t going to notice the difference. When push comes to shove, it’s probably the least important part of any recipe. If you’re making soup or a stock, it’s gonna be fine without it.
Bay leaves are kind of like bass in music. It adds an earthy undertone to everything. Whatever you’re making won’t necessarily be bad without it, but it’ll be thin and less impactful.
I agree. They’re obviously not mandatory but I really like them being there
Nah. A lot of music sounds much worse without bass, you’re just missing an entire frequency spectrum.
You can notice the difference, its just that you probably won’t know what is missing.
Bay leaves are so stupid
Yeah, it’s not as important as professionals make it out to be. Like, if you under-salt a dish, people will notice that the meal doesn’t taste as good as the last time you made it, even if they can’t identify why. But the “depth” that bay leaves are supposed to add to a dish, probably won’t even register for most people. I don’t think bay leaves are entirely useless, but I do think it’s safe for home cooks to consider it an optional ingredient. If you have them, use them. If you don’t this time? Don’t worry about it.
I was about to go off about who didn’t have bay, laurel (and rosemary and the third thing I forgot what is called. It’s yellow.) grow like weeds up here.
What do you mean y’all don’t live where I live
Turmeric, cumin, mustard?
Making your bed every day is useless.
Nobody’s gonna see it and you can’t use it without messing it up.
Ah young one I was once like you until I realised, that by not making the bed, your fitted sheet ends up absorbing more dust and moisture during the day and you have to change them more frequently. For truly optimal laziness it’s best to at least throw the quilt over.
I leave my bedding open in the morning specifically to let the moisture dry out
Dark mode should be the default on phones, websites, programs, apps, and all electronics.
My AMOLED screen draws less power this way.
I’ve hit an age where I’ve gone from Dark Mode Is Life to switching between them depending on lighting levels and display quality. There are times when dark mode is almost painful.
Yeah. And it probably depends on how much time you spend outside
As little as possible thank you very much. Outside has people!
shudder
same here. I still prefer dark mode, provided it is designed with it in mind from the get go.
The dark reader Firefox extension is for you. It makes every website darkmode.
walruses should be called saber-toothed seals
Only if sabre tooth tigers are renamed walrus tigers also.
This sounds reasonable
The real thing the US fast food market is missing is Indian food and it could be a serious game changer in terms of providing healthier / vegetarian options.
There’s an indian place by my work that has a tikka masala wrap, thought it was genius as a takeaway item. Super delicious, but an extreme mess… the idea that it would be portable was a big miss.
healthier
Fast food and mall food court Indian restaurants are common in Berlin, and I wouldn’t call any of them healthy. Every single one leans heavily on deep-fried everything, covered in flavoured oil disguised as a sauce.
The “fast” in fast food often works against the carefully prepared, fresh ingredients required for a truly healthy and tasty meal.
In lots of ways, it’s the same dichotomy as Italian cuisine, where you can get amazing Mediterranean food at a sit-down restaurant, but the fast food variety is usually just greasy pizza or oil with a side of pasta.
We have three Indian restaurants in the neighbourhood - tiny provincial town in Markgräflerland - and they’re surprisingly good. But I did notice when I lived in Brandenburg that they have the Scottish attitude towards food. Deep fry everything. Including sushi.

Following on: Dumb people exist.
Not like “Of course, in theory dumb people exist”. Actually, practically, there will be people in this thread who can’t conjugate verbs or spell and it’s not because they speak a different language, not because auto correct isnt working, and not anything else. It’s from being lower on the bell curve.
“Oh but dream_weasel! Some people are just differently-abled!”. Yeah… And some aren’t.
An opinion piece I read once about accessibility in writing—touching on things like tone indicators and breaking up overly-dense sentences/paragraphs—made a point that stuck with me and has clear applications in so many areas:
Your audience only has so much cognitive energy to devote to what you’re saying. Every little hurdle you add funnels that much more energy away from understanding your message toward deciphering what you were trying to say.
That means unnecesary jargon, overlong sentences with complex structures, and pretentious diction are all hindering your ability to communicate. But so are grammatical mistakes and typos.
Sure a few heer and there are forgivable, but fi ur reeders hev 2 desifer sumthen liek dis jus bc day shud no wut u mean, they may lose interest or be too distracted by the medium to comprehend the message.
Corollary to all this: those cute little “quirks” you give your writing so people will recognize you by your style are ironically hindering their ability to recognize you by your ideas, which are infinitely more important than an aesthetic

Horsepower is a stupid measurement of engine output what is this the 1800’s.

YYYY-MM-DD is the only acceptable numeric date format and should be the standard taught in schools.
Agreed. And at this point people should say all recent years as “twenty-twenty-six”, etc. The few people who still insist on saying “two-thousand and” make me grind my teeth.
Twenty-nine.
Wdym 2009 doesn’t count as a recent year? :'(
They said unimportant and inconsequential, both of which do not apply to date formatting.
ISO 8601 ftw
As good as ISO 8601 is its handling of time intervals is atrocious.
I would take it a step further by doing what the Japanese and Chinese languages do and possibly even making their characters for day, month, and year a worldwide symbol to be used for dates. That, or have the world come together to create worldwide usable symbols for all that. Really make sure nobody can be confused because they cannot tell whether it’s a European date or a states date.
Personally I’m a fan of MM-YY-DD
…why?
I discovered this format on 01-02-03.
OK, I’ll be the one: DD-MM-YYYY is the way to go.
That doesn’t sort well. If you read left to right, you can’t assume year so you have to read it in full, working backwards, to get the full meaning.
Year first means you get more specific while reading. Natural logic and hierarchy in reading direction.
I’m not sure if I can see your point. Is this a programming thing? I’ve seen this sentiment a couple of times on Lemmy and I don’t get it. For me it’s more logical to state a date the way you speak (I’m no English native speaker, though).
It’s a prominent concern in programming, but not only relevant there.
In my native language German, we do dd.mm.yyyy, which is the order you seem to use as well.
Other languages speak it as month, day, year. A different commenter suggested using that.
If you read left to right, is putting the date first purely because you’re used to it, or is there a different reason you can give for it?
Someone mentioned “relevance”, but where do you draw the line? You can only skip month and year if you know they’re the current month and year. But you can only know that after reading them.
When we read 123, we read it as one hundred twenty three, not three twenty one hundred. It’s the same hierarchical structure, from bigger increments and scope to smaller, higher specificity. If you care only about 10k vs 20k, you can skip the rest of the numbers.
The same goes for dates. It makes sense to go from broad to specific, in the reading direction. When reading left to right, that’s YYYY-MM-DD. I’m familiar with the current year and month, and so I can categorize at a glance. For dates further away, I can read as deep as the specificity is relevant to me - in reading order.
This, for me, is the logical hierarchical argument.
As for the sorting, simple alphabetical sorting sorts YYYY-MM-DD into time order, but not DD.MM.YYYY.
This applies not just to programming, but to all forms of text or date formatting.
If you’re sorting by date in DD.MM.YYYY, you’re reading and parsing it right to left. If it’s a date within text or pre-text, you switch the reading direction for a part of the text/title/whatever it is.
Not just programming. e.g. if you create a bunch of files or folders on your computer and they’re sorted by name, then if you do d/m/y they’ll all be out of order. y/m/d will be in order.
But yeah, for human contexts usually day is more important.
Does human context include record-keeping? Quickly sorting and searching (not just with a computer) is very important for that
More games, if not all games, should include cheats or extra sliders for both difficult but also gameplay options.
Let have infinite mana or slow mo or increase my speed or whatever. At the end of the day games are entertainment and you should be able to tweak things to better enjoy it.
(I know mods exist but those are a mixed bag in terms of if they exist and what they support)
I like the way Pacific Drive did it.
- Here’s the way we intended it.
- Here’s an easier and a harder mode.
- Here’s a bunch of difficulty settings in detail, select what you like.
I understand from a resources perspective why it’s not always done. But from a player’s perspective, I totally get you.
I do miss cheat codes.
There’s a game I played last year, the name of which I now completely forget, which I never actually finished because the final boss was such a bitch that I ended up rage quitting. Even set to easy. I’d never been so angry at a game.
Watched the ending on YouTube instead.
edit: I just remembered, it was Bramble. Beautiful game, absolutely bitch hard.
I’m looking at you, Black Mesa.

Advertising destroys everything nice (communities, websites, roads, clothes, architecture, privacy, quality of life, etc.).
Coldest Take ever.
Advertising is literally a major reason our planet and our society is where it’s at as it induces unnecessary consumption and materialism.
My related hot take: If I’m going to be subjected to Ads, I’d actually prefer to see relevant Ads (generally demographically, geographically, etc. while retaining some anonymity) than ads for products and services I’m never going to care about.
Semi-related, on my language learning journey I’ve discovered that as I watch more things in the language I’m learning via YouTube, Netflix, and other ad supported streaming services I see more and more ads in the language I’m trying to learn. And surprisingly (even to myself) I genuinely enjoy these ads because the language is usually simple and without much idiomatic use, it’s all clearly enunciated, and it’s directly related to the action on screen. Of course, everyone else in my household is now also getting those kinds of ads and I can’t help but be amused.
Ads in real life spaces though? Unless it’s telling me about some specific local thing or place, it is just ugly clutter on the scenery and architecture.
Inspired by u/_NetNomad@fedia.io comment, loaded fries defeats the purpose of fries because they become soggy every time at which point you’re basically just eating a baked potato.
The seventh planet from the sun should be called Caelus after the Roman sky god to match the other planets rather than using a latinized version of the name of the Greek sky god Ouranos.
It’s OK. You can admit that you’re just not mature enough to say Uranus with a straight face.
I’m almost 40 and I still find probe Uranus jokes funny. When does that get better?
