When are people going to learn that exports aren’t even good. The export market just gets a lot of play in politics because of concentrated interests. Exporters lobby. Politicans present arguments to justify what they are doing for exporters. That becomes political rhetoric. Generations later people actually believe it.

Countries with high exports don’t have a great quality of life. Exports don’t improve the quality of life people living there. It increases work and lowers real wages as often as not. It just makes exporter’s rich. Did British people actually benefit from the opium wars? Do Chinese workers have physical prosperity matching their level of productivity?

Exporters have convinced countries that money is more valuable than goods. Countries print money.

This is why the tariffs don’t actually hurt Canada but are just a self-own for the US. It hurts Canadian exporters. But who cares. Now Canadians get to enjoy those products. If a few jobs are lost momentarily, they are replaced by jobs serving the domestic market.

  • We learned in Trump 1.0 that he is extremely isolationist and wants to cut the US off from the world like it’s North Korea.

The way an abusive spouse cuts their partner off from all other social contacts.

The way FOX News encourages its viewership to stop watching all other media sources so they’re in an information silo.

And the US voted for him again, because we vote based on vibes and bigotry. Because we have forgotten our civic duty to vote responsibly. Because we are suckers for lying confidence men who make ridiculous promises.

So the US is due for more than a bit of harsh finding out. We should have learned after George W. Bush. We didn’t and FA’d. (Effed A?)

Anyhow a lot of Americans have cut off their MAGA relatives and neighbors. It is no surprise at all that Canada — and the entire international community — might do the same.

I’m skeptical the US is going to survive to the November election, much less the new Congress in January.

Only one nation has ever invaded Canada, and we taught them the error of their ways. If necessary, we will teach them that lesson again.

Nope. Americans are used to having wars on the other side of an ocean. Those are wars you can be oblivious of. When drones are buzzing overhead and you see smoke rising from the strategic targets in your city, you can’t drive to work because the bridge was taken down and there’s military checkpoints everywhere asking to see your papers to prove you aren’t Canadian? I think Americans will notice that.

True, there are idiots everywhere. Btw, if you have never done so, I highly recommend Pierre Burton’s two part book series on the War of 1812.

In a way, as a Canadian, I’m glad for Trump for two reasons. One, we hated him so much that the conservative candidate in our federal election lost what should have been the easiest conservative win of my lifetime because he threw in support behind trump. And two, we are finally diversifying our economy away from that volatile ass country.

gotta say i agree, and while I realize Carney is just another 2008 conservative, at the very least he is competent.

that being said, do you think we are headed for an orange official opp considering PP’s dwindling popularity with Lewis’ growing popularity (considering the orange who kept their seats were partcularly progressive)

Plus their little pal Israel. I saw a meme making a case for the biblical ark being built in North America. Perhaps we could convince Bibi and his cronies Israel should actually be in the American Midwest. We’ll see how many Yanks support Zionism when so-called ‘settlers’ are killing their neighbors and taking their homes.

if you move your pawns to the end of the board and then move them up in the z-axis, you have successfully extracted tariffs from them.

That’s what I would do if I where there. I’m in the Pacific Northwest and we feel the tourism squeeze here. I don’t care. You can’t insult your closest friend and bully them. I want the US to suffer the consequences, for a good amount of time, so every idiot is aware of the reasons for their pain. Not to mention Canada is beautiful. I could vacation at Banff or even in the far east for the rest of my life and be fine, you guys will be fine and even happier spending money to support your own countrymen.
