I actually just filled out an application on indeed because I figured why not. The questions are getting strange. It’s not a government job, no clearance required, so why are you asking if I’m a citizen of Syria?

Guessing it was for a work from home gig? Companies have been getting in hot water recently for unwittingly hiring people from countries like North Korea and inadvertently breaking US sanctions by paying them.

This is probably just a way for companies to claim in good faith that they were attempting to do some sort of screening to prevent it .

I haven’t worked for a company that hasn’t done a background check. How on earth would place of birth not show up? Hell even the movie theater I applied to in 2006 did a background check.

I would have to guess that they use stolen identities. Also a lot of the companies that claim they are running background checks for employees often do not. Usually the threat of doing so will weed out people, and they don’t tend to be cheap.

These days I have to check online on the status of them and what not. Years ago I’m sure a lot of companies may have just lied like your saying because how would you know. That said in 2020 I changed my address on something to Sofi stadium because I was being dumb and had paid something off I thought but they contacted me years later in 2020 saying I owed them $280 or something. Turns out I sent them the amount I had owed the month prior, so the interest that accrued over the month left a balance of like $25 or something and they just let it sit and add late fees until that collection company called me. Being stubborn I asked them if I could pay the $25 and call it even, they said no so I hung up and changed the address on the account because California has more protections about harassing people.

Sure enough all my background checks now have a section where the county that Inglewood is in has to state I don’t have a criminal record there. I’ve never even been to LA, let alone lived there… oops.

its very time consuming and expensive which is why they skip all that and ask you to show your resume multiple times. theres a reason you have to pay for your official transcripts/unofficial transcripts from hs/or college, also for some jobs they require references, or LORs.

It make sense for fields, like lawyer, MD or a professorship at a university, or some ivy league level requirement, theres an extra necessity for those jobs to verify your education… colleges arnt just going to willing hand over the info, hence why they ask you for your unofficial transcripts(official is usually for advanced college programs), and any job that requires licensures or certs.

  • Considering what I’ve entered into job applications and still gotten the job, I am pretty fucking sure nobody actually reads your resume or application until 15 minutes before your interview if ever. I’ll put some crazy BS in mine just to see if they read it and have never been asked about any of the crazy shit I have on there. Like being a manager of a non-existent company when I was only 3 years old. Or using myself as my references.

No, its not. I also hire and we take the time to look through the CVs of relevant candidates. If I call someone in I will have questions about their CV for the interview.

Where the lottery actually exists is whether you are the same type of person as the interviewer, because that has more of an influence on whether you get hired.

My second best job received my resume, said “You seem like a good fit, come in for an interview” and a week later did an informal vibe check interview before hiring me same day

My absolute worst job had this resume bullshit, 3 rounds of interviews and an unpaid training day before offering me half of what the website said; i only agreed because the alternative was $0 and eviction.

The problem is that resumes are extremely hard for a computer to parse. If you’re dealing with potentially thousands of applicants, you need to be able to weed out people who don’t meet the minimum requirements or else you’d be spending weeks reading resumes.

I’m aware of that and don’t care, that’s the problem of whomever is poorly and impersonally doing hiring.

If they don’t want thousands of applicants, there are tons of recruitment strategies that avoid that problem, like job fairs, employee referral bonuses, direct recruitment, and working with agencies for placements, to name only four off the top of my head.

If they want to send their ad to the wolves, they won’t get good results, but they will get a lot of them. They are also probably an exceptionally shit place to work because they can’t even recruit talent because they are “suffering from abundance” without resorting to screening out people who can’t do data entry or have better things to do than jumping through hoops.

Yeah cool. Good for them. Easily fixed problem, but everyone wants unicorn workers, so they don’t need any training, and that requires casting a very wide net and screening out the catch they don’t want.

          Fuck ‘em.

The funny things is that the non seeking websites don’t want to implement this, because it could help their competitors, so we have what we have.

I think the most likely way such standardization would happen if somebody would develop an open source format available free to use without any royalties and people would adopt it. Something like a QR code that would contain the details on some markup language. I think XML is better, but seems like JSON is more popular now.

Not defending the recruiters for not reading resumes, but I’ve seen the recruiting queue and it sucks.

Way more than half the applications are fake, from out of the country (for jobs that require you to work physically at the location), or just clearly entered for unemployment requirements. Across dozens of applications on each of the dozens of open positions each week.

State/federal requirements mean the jobs have to be posted to a bunch of equal opportunity job boards that never produce real candidates.

There’s a reason recruiters are feeding all their shit through AI. It became an AI slop fight for both sides of the job application process.

I don’t work in recruiting at all. I don’t read resumes.

Office vs labor in my industry is weighted towards labor making more money.

Non-union on government contracts requires prevailing wage pay at union agreed rates. A laborer (basic unskilled labor) can make $45/hour with fringe benefits at $25/hour. They make OT on top of that which the salaried office employees don’t.

Not every industry pays their workers garbage.

The form are important because 90% of the applicants for a job these days aren’t remotely qualified because people shotgun resumes at a hundred jobs at once without even reading the qualifications and all their resumes are formatted differently.

I don’t have the time to go through that, so yeah - I filter out people who don’t bother to fill in the fields because they probably didn’t even read what the job is.

The fields get the resume to my desk. The resume and cover letter get you an interview, and the interview gets the job offer.

I hear about all these people sending out hundreds of job applications in every direction with no response, and it makes sense. When you’re competing against a hundred people for a job, you won’t stand out with a half-ass application. Focus on doing fewer, higher-quality applications.

The fields let me filter out whether someone meets the bare minimum at a glance in a standard format. If someone gets through that, I’ll read the resume, CV, and cover letter they prepared. If they get through that, they get an interview. If they get through that I’ll check references and make an offer.

Larger organizations take it a step further and have a computer auto-filter candidates based on the fields.

Who in Burger King spends all their days filling out the exact same data all the time? Most people I see at Burger King are making food.

I was replying to the person saying that it’s important that people show they can fill out forms with precision and I’m saying that filling out the same exact data into a bunch of forms isn’t what anyone does at their job because if it was, that position should be automated away anyway.

I get hundreds of half-ass applications for jobs. But the 10% that actually fill out the application and meet the minimum qualifications almost always get an interview.
