  • I used to work at a company that processed business-end taxes.

I’m going to make my American compatriots very uncomfortable - I’ve very possibly seen your full social and address info. We handled about a third of all business taxes. I don’t care to use any of it, cuz I also got wage info. Y’all broke. (Same)

because the company I worked for processed your taxes. And your HR people are garbage and don’t know how to do their job.

I cannot tell you how many times I had to request my IT team to scrub files from our retention policy because your shitty HR sent it to me in cleartext to troubleshoot instead of through our encrypted box.

  • I’m not talking about NASA’s budget that pays NASA workers here. Im very well aware that they get peanuts and do amazing things. But if we are launching parts for a permeant moon base, we are going to be paying for launches through spacex, since nasa doesn’t maintain shuttles or anything anymore. That’s millions more into the pockets of the most obscenely rich person on earth, who has zero concern for literally anyone but himself, and cuts every single corner he can. And there are always other manufacturing contracts that go out for this sort of thing and guess who is going to get all of those? That’s right, other rich assholes who cut corners and support facism. For a project with dubious usefulness. There is very little we can gain from a manned moon base, that can’t be accomplished in existing research facilities, or done more easily and cheaply by rovers.

Im aware that starlink is worse. Its owned by the same rich asshole who’s gunna be adding more debris from the launches for moon base parts. Funny how that works, isn’t it? But if you think building a permanent moon base is only gunna take a few launches, you are sorely mistaken. Each launch can only send up so much material, and even pre-made modules require work to actually assemble. The ISS, for example, required 40 assembly flights. Then we’ll be sending regular supply missions.

Thats a huge amount of pollution and littering for a stunt. And yeah, we can work on multiple things at once, but we aren’t. I addressed that in my original comment.

  • I’m aware of that and don’t care, that’s the problem of whomever is poorly and impersonally doing hiring.

If they don’t want thousands of applicants, there are tons of recruitment strategies that avoid that problem, like job fairs, employee referral bonuses, direct recruitment, and working with agencies for placements, to name only four off the top of my head.

If they want to send their ad to the wolves, they won’t get good results, but they will get a lot of them. They are also probably an exceptionally shit place to work because they can’t even recruit talent because they are “suffering from abundance” without resorting to screening out people who can’t do data entry or have better things to do than jumping through hoops.

Yeah cool. Good for them. Easily fixed problem, but everyone wants unicorn workers, so they don’t need any training, and that requires casting a very wide net and screening out the catch they don’t want.

    Fuck ‘em.

  • Genuinely we should invalidate everything this admin has done and set the clock back to… what year is it these days…? feels so long ago? To 2024.

All the pardons he sold? Unpardoned. All the eos he proclaimed? Invalidated. Every law he signed or vetod? Reversed, or at least undone to be voted on again.

Its just wild that we don’t have any real mechanism to undo this kind of damage. I know they thought it wouldn’t happen, but fuck me, they didn’t even “what if…?”

But also, he’s a selfish grifter, why would he help anyone if he doesn’t get anything for it?

  • At this particular point in time, thats a fucking stupid goal.

Adding more debris to the already-littered low earth orbit, heat and pollution to our home environment while we roast, drown, and get blown away by ultra-powerful storms, and for what? So some rich assholes can make more money. We earth-locked plebs get basically nothing from this, unlike prior missions.

Don’t get me wrong, I love space, I love space exploration and the technological progression that comes with it… I do not love this, and I do not love whats going on with said space exploration. I’m not usually one to say “lets not do xyz because we have bigger problems” but in the case where xyz directly contributes, in a big way, to those bigger problems, at a time when the people doing/supporting xyz are doing absolutely nothing to fix the bigger problem and are in fact trying to make it worse… yeah, now is really not the time for this stunty bullshit. Not from the US.

If JAXA, ESA, ASA, CSA, etc. were the ones proposing this, as a joint venture or some such, I’d be all for it. But it’s not.

Edit to add: I feel like “moon base!!!” Is the next iteration of “rich asshole private island doomsday bunker”. It’s the ultimate private island because normal people can’t even hope to get there to do sabotage, and its completely isolated from all the climate change problems. Very horizon, specifically the far zenith.

  • I read something a while ago speculating that black holes, and thus the singularity and infinity problems inherent with their existence, may not actually exist.

Rather, they were proposed to be basically this, stars which are super dense, and do cause light to fall back into them, but rather than reaching a point of infinite density, the stars themselves lie just beyond the event horizon, so we can’t see them. Totally normal physics, just super hugely massive objects.

They called them gravetars, I believe.

Edit: gravastar, it turns out. The paper I read was something more recent than 25 years ago, however…

  • Last game I played was surviving the aftermath, which is a survival base builder sort of thing. So I’m just a standard regular person with meh traits.

The amount of fucked depends on what context I’m spawning in. In reality? Meh. In the game itself? Vaguely fucked, being more fucked as the population grows. In another reality with different rules and stuff? Ultrafucked.

  • I’ve recently been spending time somewhere that has street crossings that talk to you. Its annoying in a cute way to have a voice clearly say something to the effect of “the light to cross x street is lit, you may cross” (the annoying bit is that until it’s lit it says “wait” repeatedly)

I don’t need it, but if I did that’s exactly the sort I’d want. Its so clear! Zero confusion! I didn’t have to look up from my phone to cross the street! :p

  • I want to make something like this for my place, maybe a few, but I’m afraid of them being vandalized because I live in a conservative area.

I’m considering killing two birds with one stone by making it clear that they are under surveillance… by the people across the street who have a ring camera, and those are part of the law enforcement network.

Also I’m basically always home so not that much of a concern, really, I guess.

  • Thanks, but theres really nothing to be done about it short of rebuilding both flights entirely, and I’m not even sure that would fix them. The problem is the way they are built; the stairs to the second floor turn a corner, and the triangular stairs in said corner narrow to the point on the inside corner that it drops immediately 3 stairs down if you miss-step, and the miss-step is like a third of the stair. Incredibly dangerous, and I hold the rails for dear life every time.

The back stairs from the addition just aren’t even. They all have different rise because they needed to meet into three already-existing floors - main floor, back door at ground level, and basement floor, and they had to turn 3 corners to do that. I’ve tried to math out a way to make them even and I can’t. I’ll still have substantial differences between sections.

It’s a very old house full of very bad choices that can’t really be fixed without major overhaul. I’ll probably hire someone at some point to see if they can fix it, if I can ever afford that, but I’ll probably bite it on the stairs well before that happens :) I’m planning to paint the quarter rounds with glow pigment to help delineate the stairs in the dark, and add some glowing non-slip tape to the bullnose, but thats about the best I’ve got, and it won’t really help that much.
