Cart retrieval doesn’t add up to a significant hourly need compared to stocking, pricing, register, go backs, etc. There’s generally enough work to do that you’re always at least a little behind. No one’s getting fired because everyone returned their carts to the corral.

that’s not true. they may keep an extra front-end employee on hand to ensure they have enough employees to cover cart retrieval.

these days, supermarkets chug along with a bare-bones staff compared to 20 years ago.

back then it would have been unheard of to make any customer wait in line for more than a few minutes , but now it’s the norm.

give it 5-10 years, and it’ll be customary for customers to return their carts unless they want the parking lot to be a postapocalyptic free for all.

and the scary thing is that people will just accept and adapt based on the tropes of american culture… discourse will change from this argument to ‘if you didn’t want your car to be dinged then you shoulda returned all the carts within 2 miles.’

Not even if they didn’t. It’s like an hour of labor over the course of a day tops, for a store that has two dozen full time employees working every day. That’s like 200 daily man-hours minimum for a mid-sized store. Cart retrieval is ½% of labor at most. It’s a rounding error. Clocking in early and clocking out late account for more hours than are spent retrieving carts.
