I moved to the opposite side of the world in my early 30s. It’s totally doable.
Seeing as I’m losing my job and things in Japan aren’t great, I’m considering going halfway back if I can make it happen. (Edit: now in my mid 40s for context)
lol. I’m close to 29 and I haven’t even started yet. Been stuck since I got out of uni. Do what you want. These days anyways it’s not like you have the option not to have multiple careers anyways.
I don’t have much hope for retirement. I just know it’s gonna be hell finding a job whenever shit gets fucked up by gestures broadly at everything
My mom went to university at 30, passed the bar, became a lawyer, had beef with the provincial court, passed the bar in the next province over at 50 out of spite and commutes across the border to practice law in a different province.
She wants to help people navigate immigration court and represent them for free after she retires.
As someone who relates to the people she wants to represent, please tell her that not only does she rock but, she’s also a bonafide legend! 🖖💪
I will and I support her completely in this.
She’s always had the opinion that immigration and border control have way too much power to make snap judgements and send people packing without informing them of their rights.
She’s not even an immigration lawyer, she’s going to learn a whole legal framework after retirement just to stick it to the man.
Your mom goes to college.
Your mom rocks
Thank you, I will tell her.
Community college is awesome because you’ll get to take an African literature studies course with 17 year olds straight out of high school, and retired 50 year old construction workers who decided to come back to school. All in the same room.
My first year of university I went for a japanese course, and we were mostly 18 year olds, some 20-somethings…, and a freshly retired lady. Eventually I decided it wasn’t my thing, but I remember these few weeks rather fondly
My roommate in college thought that older students should be banned because they don’t have anything more important to do than study, so they get excellent grades and throw off the grading curve for the “real” students. It was fucking up his partying schedule, having to study to keep up with the older, better students.
I told him to go fuck himself, and went to the job I worked through my entire college term.
Going a different direction later in life is absolutely not “starting over.” Your life experience comes with you, and if you’re even slightly self-aware, that will give you a leg up. I decided to go back to school for a specific career when I was 30 after working in retail management for awhile, and by 36, I was in management in that new career, which was directly attributable to my prior work and life experience. Everything you experience contributes to who you are
Fantastic take
This gives me hopes that I too some day…
…will be able to sue several companies into bankrupcy, and then keep going.
Now that I’m in my 40s with small group insurance, I, too, am more focused on the 63 year old who wants to go after big pharma than I am on some faulty idea of youth. Godspeed, my friend.
Friend of mine could afford to retire early at 55. Did much of nothing for a few years. Then one day, he decided to go back to school. He’s now well on his way to a PhD in a completely unrelated field. He says it made him excited about life again.
That’s honestly what I would do if I could retire early, just go back to uni to study something that catches my fancy
It’s both. “It’s too late” for marketing yourself to capitalism. But it’s never too late to better yourself for yourself
I mean, companies are looking for the 10+ years of experience 20 year old unicorn…
I mean, companies are looking for the 10+ years of experience 20 year old unicorn…
Which is actually translated as, “We need to pay you 20 year old prices for experienced levels.”
started comp science at 28ish. if you can tell a story around it its fine. but prepare to see ppl younger than u earn 2x ++ money, have a house, tesla and family while you struggle to pay repair fees for your 20yr old car.
Why the fuck would I want a tesla

Only a relatively small portion of recent graduates with cs degrees are going to be making that kind of money, and even an even tinier portion of the total population. The Median personal income of the United States is only 44k a year.
Ugh, who wants a Tesla, a shit mortgage, and that guy’s family. I’d rather be you any day.
This was going to be true even without going back to school FWIW. Even if you go in at 18 there’s going to be rich international (and domestic, but more likely with international) students who have never worked a day in their life and probably won’t after graduating. Do you and don’t worry about how long it took you to get around to it.
-going back at ~40ish
Also ~40ish, classes start next week!
~30 ish, moving from software engineering to education. Starting a bachelor on Monday
Hell yeah!
Get hyped, by virtue of not being a baby fresh out of high school you are now one of the cool students! I have a few family members that are teachers and they say that older students are usually the teachers’ favorites because they are so motivated. I try to use my position as an old dude to show the youngins it’s okay to ask questions and not know things, and to get excited about stuff. But I’ve also met a lot more people my age and older than I thought I would!
good luck to both of you!
you can do whatever you want–you just have to be willing to pay the price. even someone living check-to-check could go back to school if they were willing to work 20 hours a day and possibly live in their car.
…just at the hope of having a house in the suburbs lol.
here’s my perspective as an old man: unless you have enough money to NOT WORK for the rest of your life or are on the track to retire much earlier than 65, you don’t really have shit. at least nothing worth feeling superior about.
you do however have dreams and passions that could possibly be fulfilled despite your financial situation.
the person in the OPs story is just driven by justice and possibly revenge. but it’s not as big a deal if you frame it like that.

I don’t even think this is worth feeling superior about. You have a lot of money? So what?
I know plenty of people who are retiring and feel empty since they did nothing but make money.
I like this so much. Very inspiring and motivating. It’s almost never too late to get shit done, live your life and fulfilling your dreams. :)
Reject society’s creepy pedophilic obsession with youth. Embrace personal growth at all stages of life. We’re all works in progress.
If you’re not learning and growing then you’re already dead.
*edit
Me: positive message encouraging personal growth.
Lemmy: I want to pedantically argue with you about the dictionary definition of “pedophilic”.
Ok guys lol focusing on the real stuff huh?
Jesus fucking Christ, not everything is pedophilia. I’m starting to think that society is more obsessed with pedophilia that pedophiles are obsessed with children.
I apologize in advance - I don’t mean to jump down your throat. It just seems like there is an unhealthy tendency to label things we don’t like as pedophilic.
Why you like pedos bro? /s
Depends on how old Christ was at the time.
mary was like 11-14
Not disputing that, my reply was directed at this part of the comment above though:
Jesus fucking Christ
It’s not pedophilia if they don’t want to fuck kids but are obsessed with youth and/or wanting to be young. Most of advertising is built around “it’s fun to be young” and “youth and beauty”. Capitalism as monetized envy. Make the people with money want the thing they can’t buy.
And the pedophilia is the root of it. Slowly, with small steps to youth and younger and younger. Women’s bodys must look like undeveloped, prepubety girl- slim , without hair on body and don’t let me start about being innocent and pure.
Neither of us know that for sure so don’t be pedantic
lol lemmy loves pedantry never change y’all
Realistically, the problem isn’t “starting over”.
The problem is if you are taking the advice of random internet strangers seriously for advice on complicated and highly subjective questions like that.
Do random internet strangers sometimes give good advice? Sure. But for these types of questions it’s usually more by accident than anything.
I took your advice and ignored this
Good. Continue doing that for all comments.
It’s going great!
63 year old neighbor is taking the bar exam because he has a list of pharma companies he plans to sue
He’s like an alternate universe version of John Kramer, only the movies based on him would be called “Law”.
Look, just sit down and stop doing anything. What’s the point of moving your body around after 20? It’s all just flailing limbs and jiggling fat.
What are you gonna do, huh? Take up a hobby? Learn something? Improve humanity? Yea right, you won’t do a goddamned thing. Lay down, accept the inexorable entropy of the universe, and submit to those who are slightly more able to exert power over our pathetic and meaningless existence.
What’s that? The complexity of emergence is an impossibly rare gift wasted on the few and the ignorant? NO OF COURSE NOT! Eat some more Pop Tarts and watch another Sitcom you fat disgusting fuck!
This reads like a Disco Elysium skill check, but I can’t quite pinpoint which one it would be
