  • I think the difference with the Fediverse is there is an end. There is old content. You catch up to where you left off. It’s not truly an “infinite scroll” in the way OP is referring to.

With stuff like Reddit, they organize to where it all feels recent, it’s all relevant, and it’s all new. Every time you refresh, new psuedo-random (algorithmic) content takes it’s place. They almost prevent you from seeing old content. The “infinite scroll” is more like “infinite content”.

In this way, they put people in an endless loop. People always have something to find, and because of the infinite scroll, you’ll always have a good chance of finding “rares”. It’s exhausting once you notice it.

At least I can tell I’ve opened Lemmy too many times today because all of the recent posts are marked as read.

Calling every doctor dumb unless they graduated magna cum laude

I didn’t call every doctor dumb. I’m saying the ones us regular people get are more likely to be dumb. The rich get the ones who have proven they’re not dumb. There are doctors who barely pass medical school… Where do you think they work…? Why would a doctor who graduated from Harvard valedictorian or whatever work at a small town hospital? They’re going to work for a huge ass hospital in a huge ass city making huge ass money from huge ass clients. I just think it’s common sense in a world where the rich want the poor to suffer.

how notoriously hard it is to even barely pass a medical exam.

It should be hard. You’re training to be a fucking doctor, with the ability to diagnose people with lifelong conditions. With the experience I’ve had with many medical professionals, maybe they should make them even harder. Obviously they’re not hard enough because every PCP, specialist, PT, etc. I’ve seen has said there’s nothing wrong with me which is completely fucking false, and if they were a real doctor, who wanted to help their patients with their medical issues, they would work with me until they could figure it out.

I’m not hating on emergency services, nurses, etc. I’m hating on the people in the world that have dedicated their lives to the profession of helping others, only to sidestep and defer patients while still getting that doctor’s paycheck. I’m hating on the people who are doctors for the title, not the job satisfaction. The doctors who ask you the same questions when they know you’ve been referred over and over and over.

I eat enough fucking vegetables doc, that’s not why I’ve had chronic pain for over 10 fucking years…

People talk about affording healthcare but nobody thinks about the other problem that is smart doctors being for the rich and dumb doctors being for the poor.

You think those straight A med students are working at your local hospital? LOL! No, we get the doctors who got Ds and Cs who will take your temperature and tap your leg but have no skillset outside of the basics. They only wanted to be doctors because their families told them to or because they were told they’d make good money.

The rich? They get the best doctors there is. They have the money. Any issue they have, they can go to the best doctor and probably get it figured out immediately. Compared to the regular person, who gets referral after referral after referral because the doctors for us have no fucking idea what they’re doing. Gets told to take meds that aren’t even related to the problem. Gets told their symptoms “shouldn’t be possible”.

Probably unnecessary, just wanted to get this thought out there because I never see anyone talking about it and these are problems I’ve experienced first-hand.

  • I often see posts from the LGBT community that make me feel… Envious? Almost like I’m missing out on something. The social stigma of being “gay” for having feelings must’ve really gotten to me growing up. I feel there’s a blockage in my brain and emotions that tells me I can’t be a silly, goofy, caring guy, so I default to being quiet and closed off. Almost like my true potential as a person is being surpressed by the thoughts of myself and the beliefs of those around me.

I’ve thought about it, and I know I’m not gay, but as you describe in your post, there is some kind of societal disapproval around men having deeper emotions that I see in almost everyone around me, especially in myself. My dad and brother never vent, complain, cry, etc. They just wake up, go to work, and distract themselves the rest of the day. I can’t remember the last time I had a deep conversation with somebody other than my wife (we fortunately don’t have a “traditional” relationship in the sense of this post and can be vulnerable with each other). The last 2 times I’ve tried to communicate real issues with my dad, I’ve written real, detailed letters, which went completely ignored, twice.

I completely see what you’re getting at. Traditional gender roles DO seem to make love impossible, and the hyper-masculine(?) somehow make an exception to reproduce. At least that would explain why I was born, but my family has shown little care for the mental health or wellbeing of myself or others. It’s almost like the societal pressure to get married and have children override the actual feelings of love for others.

  • I actually just made a little diagram for myself to help with troubleshooting. Hopefully it’s helpful for others wanting to automate their movie/show accumulation. I made it a little simpler than the original by taking out the music part of it (lmk if I should share the full thing).

For context, the green boxes are the main server, the grey boxes are running on a Raspberry Pi that’s behind an always-on VPN (Mullvad). You search for movies/shows with Sonarr/Radarr, which browses torrent trackers with Prowlarr, and sends the torrent to QBittorrent. QBT then moves downloaded files to the Seeding directory, where they’re automatically copied into the media directory. Jellyfin then automatically scans for new content and fetches Metadata to make it look pretty.

Your family wouldn’t need to do any fancy port stuff, you’d just need to create accounts on your Jellyfin server and have them log in. All you’d need to port forward is a port for Jellyfin.

edit: I read over the post again and you could definitely take out the whole automated part with Sonarr/Radarr/Prowlarr and just manually search for torrents and the end experience would be the same for your family, just a little more tedious if you get a lot of requests
