Silent Hill 2 is, in my opinion, in fierce contention for the best video game ever made. At the moment I’d say the top three are Silent Hill 2, Morrowind, and Red Dead Redemption 2.
I was overjoyed to hear the remake received overwhelmingly positive acclaim. Having played it myself I think they did a phenomenal job remaking it. Bloober perfectly balanced keeping what was great with what needed updating (fucking tank controls), and the stuff they added and expanded felt very well done and very reverent to the original.
Nothing short of an artistic masterpiece.
I don’t think I could just limit my candidates to three. One of my personal criteria is that the game was awesome when released (one of those games I kept obsessing about, outside gaming time), but is also good now when replayed (discounting the typical gameplay QoL improvements since then). Several really good games do that for me (in no particular order):
- Silent Hill 2
- Morrowind
- Terranigma
- Bloodborne
- Chrono Trigger
- Half-Life
- Baldur’s Gate 2
- Pokémon Crystal
- Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
- Tactics Ogre
- Ultima 6
- Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
… and many others.
Most of them are old, mainly because I don’t know if my modern favorites will pass the test of time in 10 years (games like Crimson Desert, Control, Lies of P or Wuchang).
I have never played any of these and I need to rectify that. I started Elder Scrolls with Oblivion. I even own RDR2.
The first last of us is my first, IMHO. But Silent Hill 2 really is a very close second.

Even though I love Elden Ring, Bloodborne is a better, and I would say more interesting game.
God of War can suck my ass though. The original was awesome for its time, though not really a candidate for “best game”. The new one is just boooring.

I like Silent Hill 2 (the original, not the remake), and consider it the best Silent Hill game, but let’s not kid ourselves. It was only mildly received when it came out, getting an average score of 6 or 7 out of 10. It only very recently came into vogue.
I loathe its ability to spawn the millions of YouTube video essays about it. This is the pain of a franchise you love going mainstream and then all the new people completely change it. Tale as old as time.
Don’t let your hobbies go mainstream people. Its a two edged sword. Sure, you get more interest and more money into the sector, but it also permanently changes forever, and almost never for the better.
Maybe it didn’t get glowing reviews from IGN and similar websites back then but I remember it being extremely popular when I first played it as a kid 20 years ago. I actually rented it through GameFly after I saw it in a list of the best video games ever made.
People, especially the Japanese players, wanted a sequel that continued the story of Harry Mason. That’s why Konami forced Team Silent to change Silent Hill 3 in order to incorporate all the elements to force a connection to Silent Hill 1. Silent Hill 2 had so many complaints about not being connected to Silent Hill 1 that it permanently disfigured Silent Hill 3.
I guess back then we didn’t fully understand the concept of a sequel with a 2 in the title not directly continuing the story from the original. Whatever the case, the fact remains that Silent Hill 1 was immensely more popular than Silent Hill 2 for a good long while. It wasn’t until recently (maybe within the last 10 years or so) that Silent Hill 2 came into the spotlight.
Ahhh, I was still a bit too young to remember much about the first game. Mostly just memories of my father playing it. I do remember watching a video explaining that Silent Hill 2 did kinda fuck up the lore between all the games. Since it was so self contained and specific to James’ experience, any reference to Silent Hill 2 in the later games didnt make any sense. If Pyramid Head was created by James’ guilty conscience, he shouldn’t have appeared in later games.
