cw: this might destroy quite a few illusions

after thinking about it for a long time, i cannot identify as a kitty cat, because i cannot accept meat to be my natural primary source of calories. oh how cruel it is to depend on killing others just to sustain yourself.

i do agree with the naps though. :3

Probably gonna get some hate for this, but you know, there’s no scientific basis to argue that cats cannot thrive on a vegan diet, if all nutritional needs are met. We really don’t have solid data available, but what we have doesn’t allow for that conclusion and while there are caveats which should be considered (urinary acidity, formulated foods not being as nutritionally sound as they claim), it actually may have health benefits, too, much like a vegan diet for humans.

If cats are feeding themselves, the only time they eat vegetables is when they’re having difficulty getting a hairball up. They have evolved to be obligate carnivores and if you’re not prepared to feed them meat, get a pet bunny instead.

        Nobody was talking about vegetables

if all nutritional needs are met

That’s what the comment you replied to said. Artificial meat substitutes and stuff like that. There’s nothing magically special about meat that would be impossible to recreate via other means. As long as all the nutritional stuff is in there and the stuff can be digested by the cat, I can’t imagine a problem with it. The cat isn’t going to read the side of the packaging and get mad about a lack of real meat.

Yes but they can still taste the food. Meat substitutes are something that some humans choose to eat for ethical reasons, but they aren’t good, they’re good enough to stand in for meat when we are out of by the meat industry.

Again if you want a house pet that doesn’t eat meat and doesn’t hunt, torture and kill other animals for fun, there are other options. Bunnies, chinchillas, guinea pigs, rats, mice, parrots, budgies, pot belly pigs, etc will all be happy to eat vegan food (or if you’re hung up on the Idea of having a cat, get a cat girl). Don’t try to force cats to eat vegan food.

We are omnivores and can eat pretty much anything from grass seeds to whales to a fucking Cessna 150. Cats aren’t like that. They’ve evolved to depend on meat as their sole source of nutrition. Their sense of taste is also evolved to love meat. They can’t really taste much else. If you’re forcing your cat to choke down mycoprotein and soy beans to stay alive, you are a bad person.

How would you feel if someone abducted you, and forced you to eat kiviak to stay alive and stopped you from going out to feed yourself?

To reiterate: There’s nothing magically special about meat that would be impossible to recreate via other means. That also includes the taste. I don’t claim that something like this exists currently. I don’t own a cat and probably never will. My understanding is that the vast majority of cat food is already quite far from the look and feel of the actual meat that goes into it. I’m just saying that I don’t see a problem why artificial meat couldn’t be improved to meet the same standard.

The majority of cat food is very far from the meat that goes into it which is why you don’t buy the shitty stuff. But some of it actually smells (and I assume tastes) like meat.

I was actually tempted to eat this one. It smells pretty good.

I don’t think you’re wrong but for anyone thinking about feeding their cat a vegan diet: dont. The no solid data is important and it would require a special diet that you cant get currently.

I really wonder, what makes you say that?

We do have guidelines from authorities about what nutritional values cat food should have and manufacturers usually claim their product follows these guidelines.

Now I’ll give you that - they’ve been shown to be full of shit often - but that’s actually true for both vegan and meat-based formulas. Meat-based even comes with its own set of problems and related health issues, like food containing rotten meat and plastic packaging.

Manufacturers should be put under real scrutiny to make sure their product always contains all the necessary nutrients, vegan or not.

Most catfood that you can buy in the shops is actual trash. Anything containing grain should be avoided. The good stuff doesn’t really cost much more if you buy it in bulk and the cats don’t need as much of it so you end up using less.

Orijen and Bozita are both good grain free options, if anyone is looking for recommendations.
