Yes but the neonazis use actual Norse pagan symbolism, which means you can’t use Norse themed jewelry without people thinking you’re a fascist. 😠

In Germany, the distinction seems to be that Nazis might get away with homosexuality (e.g. Alice Weidel, one of the AfD party leaders, is a lesbian women), but they don’t consider themselves part of the LGBT+ community and thus won’t fly the usual pride flags.

No more so than any other military force of the same era. Are you going to boycott ren fairies for the same reason? Sometimes people just like to dress up in traditional jewelry because it looks pretty.

The person I replied to was talking about jewelry. Are you wearing a necklace with ar-15 and screaming child pendants on it?

The American equivalent here would be wearing a necklace decipting a bald eagle or some symbol prevalent in American culture.

Why do you keep talking about writing? The discussion is about jewelry. What does their jewelry have to do with raping and enslaving people? Same thing wearing a swastika has to do with gassing 6 million people and trying to conquer europe

not quite. you seem to be able to distinguish the american culture from gun violence in schools, rightfully saying that you’d have to wear a necklace shaped like a gun for it to be a condonation of gun violence. But you don’t make that distinction when it comes to norse culture and raping and enslaving people. And no, it’s not the same thing as swastikas, as swastikas were appropriated by the nazis, also nazis are not a culture. It would be like saying that wearing anything pertaining to the German culture makes you a Holocaust apologist.

i like the “no Nazis in Valhalla” phrase because Valhalla is an idea, not a real thing. but let’s not pretend vikings were good people just to spite Nazis. you’re just doing the same mythologizing.

They were people. There were good ones and bad ones. Some might help with the laundry, some might blow a gasket for being reminded to clean up after dinner, some would be cried over and missed because they went out to sea and never came home. Generalising any culture or group in one direction or the other isn’t encouraging informed discussion. Nazis, however, are unequivocally bad, 'mkay?

Vikings was the name given specifically to the ones who got on ships to go raiding and pillaging. It was not the normal citizens.

Just like not every German citizen was part of the Nazi party, not every Nord was a Viking.

Valhalla isn’t a reward though, it’s a hell for those that don’t enjoy battle. Here’s what happens in Valhalla:

    • You equip your armor and weapons
    • You walk out into the courtyard
    • You kill eachother
    • You are resurrected
    • You go to dinner
    • You equip your armor and weapons
    • You walk out into the courtyard
    • You kill eachother

    etc. etc.

It is NOT a reward. Valhalla is not heaven, it is a place that Odin puts his very specific chosen warriors that died a violent death in battle. Whether you go to Valhalla doesn’t depend on you being either a good or bad person, only how you died. Odin himself will even actively intervene and make sure you lose your fight and die in battle, just because he wants you as one of his Einherjar.

Valhalla being portrayed as this big reward for good people is a bastardised version brought in by Christians.

OP didn’t include this, but the whole point of Valhalla is that it’s a training facility for Ragnarok. Odin is gathering the fiercest warriors to fight at the end of the world.

Also, it’s possible (likely?) that Norse warriors actually really wanted to go to Valhalla. Their values system was different to ours, and a place where you get to fight (gain honor) and feast with your friends every day probably sounded pretty good to them.

Man Valhalla must suck extra. It’s like being a toddler and playing soccer with the grown-ups.

Imagine thinking you will be the elite warrior hero but then WW2 plane pilots and tank operators that died during battle show up.

Entrance to Valhalla doesn’t depend on your killstreak. It’s more about your warrior spirit. The Norse likely would have respected warriors who fought against equal or stronger enemies more than those who cowardly fought against weaker foes. Remember, the battle for Ragnarok will be against titanic monsters and giants. The Norse believed they would be the underdogs in that fight.

For instance, I doubt remote drone operators would qualify, although your example of WW2 tank and plane crew definitely could.

Absolutely! Also why Berserkers were a thing - to charge into battle with a weapon in each hand and no defense showed their spirit like not much else could.

So that they could join the immortal dead and live on as legend while they feast and prepare with Thor for the end times.
