To be slightly fair, some did kidnap their prospectives, feed them poison, make them commit crime or murder each other and then basically tell them “you’re criminals and society won’t welcome you back anymore. You’re free to go back, but we’ll tell them you’re our recruits and they won’t be able to trust you at all even if they don’t kill you on the spot. We’re the only choice you have left.”
