Team Fortress 2 comes close to that if you can ignore cosmetics. The gameplay still holds up today and its also fun to just join the Jump Academy and do some rocket jumping.

Anyway I’m a bit more fond of post Romero/Carrack Id Software (Q3/Live, QChampions, Doom Reboot) and enjoy more the stuff the community been doing
at least they released the sources back then
not to mention significant chunks of the game just being completely free and redistributable
