      I went all to AV1 last year. Enough stuff supports it, and realtime transcoding on a (relatively cheap) Arc GPU works well enough.

      AV1 is superior enough for both size and visual fidelity, that it’s worth the slightly extra encoding time. But absolutely not if you don’t have HW encoding.

        Naw it works without hardware encoding just takes a little longer. I just create a script that batches everything up and let it work.

      I would like to do this but I’m not confident I wouldn’t turn the quality to shit when doing the reencode.

        You won’t if you just create copy first then o ly use like 30 sec clips and compare them. Look at CRF and preset modes. I use ffmpeg but hand-brake is also a good frontend if you don’t like cli.
