The underlying technology is still very cool, just the way it is shoved down everyones throats is not, and the way they suck up everything humans created.

To paraphrase Cory Doctrow: evaluate new technologies based not only on what they can do, but also on who they do it for, and who they do it to.

Yeah, this is the part that it feels like 80% of the world missed and/or doesn’t understand. The techbros usurped the term “AI”, applied it to this generative token predicting garbage, and renamed the other stuff “AGI”. In today’s terms if we want to look back at all that cool ‘AI’ stuff from movies and science fiction past, we need to call that stuff “AGI” to level set the terminology.

Robots in fiction were almost always just weird humans.

Real robots are not humans, but machines.

But most authors are incapable of depicting real machines in their stories. Or real animals, or real hacking, or real economic systems, or any profession that isn’t their own…

Except actual robots IRL are often delightful. I will smooch a roomba, theyre cute as fuck. Its just genai thats revolting (and the abusive corporate practices and surveillance capitalism with which many technologies are implemented)
