I visited a Swedish family a long time ago and they introduced me to one of their favourite snacks, layered bread with mayo in-between each slice, like a cake. They seemed very proud of it.
You reeeeally downplay Smörgåstårta (pinnacle of any scandinavian festivity food imo) with this description.
You have white bread with layered savory fillings - this is correct. But the contents should be like 40% shrimp, in what you call a Skagenröra or similar. And sallad leafs, cucumber slices, cold smoked salmon (very important), lemon slices and tomato. Lots of dill as well.
But bitterballen is honestly nothing to be proud of. I was at a dutch christmas bouffé once, and it was so bleak. Pea soup with prk, bitterballen, root vegetable mash. Barbaric.
No one would ever make fun of British food again if the Anglosphere was more aware of Dutch food.

I promise it’s the best.
The only good parts about the Dutch kitchen are the fried and deep fried snacks. The herring may be the only exception. Everything else… fully agree.
