These images always seem a little weird to me. Is the outer layer of bone in the cheeks and jaw carved away to show the teeth, or does it just grow over at some point later in life? Because there are no giant gaps in a normal adult skull.

Do you mean before birth already? Every part of a kid is full grown.
Dentist mentioned my son had toothbuds and we were watching progress on xrays to see if they’d fully form. But maybe he was referring to the roots
