It is strange to me how slop enthusiasts phrase their argument as “(a) You better start eating slop or be left behind because (b) it is inevitable and © it is not going away.”
(a) implied threat of a good time.
(b) prediction which may never be fulfilled.
© assumption the prediction has already come to pass.
We have a “chicken processing plant” being planned that is going to use over 3 million gallons of water a day. Which is more than the other two we have, combined.
It’s almost certainly a bait and switch for a data center, and of course the town hall is at 2pm on a Monday.
Even if it’s not, it’s 1500ft from our drinking water source.
Anti-AI activists in Amsterdam flooded onto an unfinished Microsoft data center campus on Friday as part of a massive demonstration against big tech.
The protest, first reported in the US by The Verge, saw around 100 activists scale the site’s fences and block construction, while hundreds more demonstrated against the AI industry outside. At one point, a handful of protestors even scaled a massive construction crane, lighting off smoke bombs and affixing a banner to the side declaring “fck AI.”
Microsoft can call it cloud infrastructure all it wants, but the people living next to it see fences, construction, and a bigger claim on local resources. Funny how the benefits are always described as global while the costs arrive at a very specific address.
I mean I’d say it’s mostly fine as long as the local/relevant politicians and gov officials actually did their jobs adequately for the people…. the problem is more on them than it is inherently Microsoft in many cases. There’s a reason we have like 4000 more than every other country lol.
Obviously if the megacorpo tries strongarming it one way or another, that makes the situation a bit different so don’t take this as me being pro-megacorp!! I love that these people are fighting back FWIW.
