- “Old web” things were replaced by VC-backed apps because the apps had a better user experience, not just because big tech conspired to kill the old web. People wanted to use social media instead of RSS feeds because social media is easier to use than RSS feeds. Ditto for Discord replacing IRC. People here sometimes act like IRC declined because of a bigtech conspiracy against it. IRC declined because you had to message a freaking bot once a month to keep your nickname.
- Wayland and systemd solve a lot of problems and are overall a step in the right direction.

I remember this game being talked about simply because it was good AND because it basically had no promotion done for it. Like, every review said, “Activision just released a perfectly solid game out of nowhere for some reason.”
I have never even played Guild Wars and I am excited by this. With so many games being abandoned shortly after launch, this is very cool to see.

It feels really cool to use a purely mechanical one, haha. Like you’re a chemist in the 16th century figuring out pressure for the first time.

I hadn’t really thought about the fact that Ubuntu (and many others, apparently) don’t have hibernation. I switched to Debian about a year ago, and I wasn’t sure what the Hibernate button did when I saw it for the first time. But after I searched to find out, I started using it all the time.

Calipers. I bought a cheapo pair (this one) because it was convenient for measuring the parts on a mechanical watch that I was modding. Now I use them all the time around the house for finding the size of nuts, bolts, rope thickness, etc.
- tuckerm@feddit.onlinetoAsk Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is javascript the most versatile programming language when it comes to building a wide variety of things?English7·7 days ago
Knowing Javascript is super useful. You’ll get a lot of people recommending other languages, mainly because Javascript has its quirks that will bother you eventually. Those are valid criticisms of Javascript. But it is useful because of how universally available it is. Web apps get hate for being slower than native apps, but it is nice being able to put a browser-based project together, knowing that basically every computer on earth will be able to run it.
I think your general idea is correct. You’ll probably also find that, once you know one language, you’ll end up picking up others much more quickly.
I’ve always thought that it’s easier to learn something if you are somehow drawn towards that thing. So if you find Javascript appealing, go for it. Don’t bother trying to learn the “perfect” or “best” programming language; there isn’t one anyway.

The Exorcist bears some (much?) responsibility for kicking off the Satanic panic.
Many war photos could work for this question, too. The first one that comes to mind for me is “The Terror of War,” often called “Napalm Girl,” from the Vietnam War.

Yes, I think that’s right. The Sonic 1 team was working on Sonic CD while Sega Technical Institute worked on Sonic 2, and later 3 & Knuckles.

Ditto Tales from the Crypt, except for me it was just The Cryptkeeper himself. I don’t remember any of the specific stories; my cousin and I would watch them when we were 5-6 years old. We weren’t old enough to even understand what was happening, but I definitely remember the skeleton announcer being really scary.
I didn’t watch the show again until about 25 years later, and was surprised to find that the skeleton announcer was actually supposed to be funny. :D

You’re making me want to finally beat Sonic CD. Seems like it’s the most polarizing of the classic Sonic games. I know some people really like it.
I didn’t really enjoy it when I first played it; it seemed like a step back from Sonic 2. I later found out that it was created by the team that made Sonic 1, and a different team made Sonic 2. That explains why Sonic CD looks and plays more like Sonic 1.

This is no different from how it is already, though. If a user posts a CSAM link, your server immediately visits that link to scrape it, and you suddenly have that content on your server.
Of course, if you have a blocklist of forbidden sites, then your server will know not to scrape that site. And the same thing applies if we allow servers to send pre-scraped metadata. If the incoming message is for a blocked URL, just drop the message and don’t save any part of it.
The only new threat here is for a malicious server operator to modify outgoing messages to include CSAM metadata on a harmless link. However, that possibility already exists with any other content posted on the fediverse. If a malicious server is modifying its own outgoing messages, the only fix is to defederate from it.
Allowing servers to forward pre-scraped metadata to other servers does not introduce any new threats that do not already exist.

I’m a fan of the second one. My thought is, if you trust a server enough to accept messages from it, then you should also trust it enough to let it scrape the page title, article image, etc. for you, too.

That’s definitely my biggest complaint after switching to KDE earlier this year. Overall, I love it. I’d recommend it for new users because it’s easy to understand. But their design philosophy is all over the place when it comes to settings. There’s a mixture of hamburger icons, cog icons, and Settings menus in the toolbar. Plus the confusion of mixing settings related to the desktop environment right next to the application settings.
It’s not great with core apps, and then the community doesn’t have clear guidelines to go off of when making their own apps.

I swear I saw a comment around here that said “the average user does not want bloatware like systemd on their computer” and I just kind of wonder if we are all living on the same planet sometimes.
Web, and its a Piefed server. I’m going to check out the available apps sometime, though.

Paul McCartney and 21 Pilots, both at Bonnaroo 2013.
21 Pilots were getting popular, but this was still a year before Blurryface came out, so they were on one of the smaller stages during the daytime. Even so, their energy was amazing.
Paul McCartney just had this presence about him. It also helps if you have multiple hours of hit songs that are completely cemented in popular culture. His two hour set lasted four hours, he came back out for four encores, and I don’t think a single person left early.
And since you didn’t say musical performances: comedian Emo Philips! Saw him at a comedy club and it was probably the funniest thing I’ve ever been to.

While I’m glad that Hideo Kojima’s projects were picked up by Microsoft, and therefore the people at his studio will have paychecks because of that, it has to make these layoffs so much harder to take. MS just willingly picked up two projects from a guy who is chronically over budget, but they’re still doing layoffs for their existing employees.
