Interesting about the stevia! May I ask what it tastes like to you? A couple of years I bought a liquid stevia sweetener on a whim (the “regular” one might have been sold out), and was surprised that it tasted… Idk. Sweet, but way warmer than regular sweetener. Hard to describe. Used up the bottle, then bought my regular sweetener again and somehow, it tasted awfully bitter to me now. Somehow, I can’t go back now and really like stevia.

I’ve made a complete 180 on Campari. I haaaaaaated it and regretted buying the bottle the first time I tried a cocktail with it. Couldn’t believe how it ruined the entire drink. Since I had the bottle, I tried again, with a different drink. Even worse.

Was close to chucking the bottle out, gave it one last try with a modified Jungle Bird:

• 45ml dark (!) rum
• 15ml Campari
• 15ml simple syrup
• 30ml lemon juice
• 60ml pineapple juice

Shake with relatively little ice. Strain into low-ball glass lightly packed with crushed ice. Let dilute for a minute.

Surprisingly, despite being able to taste the Campari, this one was actually really great. Made it again a couple of days later, and again. Since then, it’s my favorite cocktail, period.

After a while, went back and tasted Campari pure and to my mild surprise, also liked it. Went back to the awful drinks (first one was a Negroni) and also really liked them now.

So… yeah. I don’t know why, but somehow, I went from hating it to absolutely loving it.

Boiling broccoli.

It’s just bad, and wrong. I know lots of people who don’t like broccoli, and when I ask why it’s usually because that’s the only / main way they’ve had it. For me it’s the opposite, I love broccoli, it’s my favorite vegetable.

Acceptable methods of preparation, in descending order:

• pan-fried, hard. High heat, add a good oil and immediately follow with roughly chopped (e.g. halve the large “flowers”) broccoli so the oil doesn’t burn. It will sizzle and crack like crazy for a couple of minutes. In the end, you should have brown-almost-black, caramelized flowers/stems, that are still very crisp on the inside. If you want to make a sauce, set aside or make simultaneously and only combine towards the end, so you don’t cook the broccoli until soft after frying.
• oven-roasted. High heat, again in the oven until almost blackened in spots. It’s almost, but not quite as good as pan-fried, but that seems to be common with oven-roasting. You likely loose a lot of the inner crispness. But, no oil spritzes.
• blanched, shortly. IDK why you’d ever really want this, unless it’s to make the color pop. Way worse than oven roasted, way better than cooked or steamed.

Note this only applies to fresh broccoli, the frozen stuff is unsalvageable.

There’s always one comment pointing that out, with a derailed conversation below, but most of the comments will be “actually, if you repeatedly close then reopen a YouTube video for 10-15 times, it will not show the ad on the next open!” with a million “don’t tell, now Google is gonna patch!” replies. I wish I was joking.

If you don’t use an Adblocker, get one, NOW. It takes 30s. If you think “it’s not that bad”, install it anyways and give it a try for a week. Disable it. See if it’s really “not that bad”, lmao.

Does it actually? My VM has a lot of RAM, and Proxmox reports usage always around 90%, but that’s no matter how much RAM it ACTUALLY has, because almost all of that is cache and not strictly necessary. free -m shows Jellyfin using maybe 2 Gigs.

Haha. Might have slightly exaggerated. But only slightly.

The Proxmox host in question has a 1Gbit connection to the NAS. (Unfortunately. The other hosts don’t have a GPU, but SPF+… Oh well, can’t have everything.)

At some point in the last couple of months, it must have been damaged, and negotiated down to only 100Mbit. This must roughly have coincided with the Jellyfin 10.11 update, since I remember thinking that it must be the cause, due to close proximity of update and first issues.

Anyways. For basically everything in my library, 100Mbit is fine. Streaming an episode NAS->Jellyfin and Jellyfin->TV at the same time basically never saturates the link.

BUT, from what I’ve gathered by digging through Jellyfin issues and PRs, there’s a separate issue where Jellyfin will pull the episode, and if you need subtitles extracted from the episode file server-side (to transcode them in, if the clients can’t play them), it will at the same time pull the episode AGAIN, and together with the Jellyfin->TV direction, that’s frequently enough that it saturates the link.

Symptoms is (was) either a 20-30s wait before the episode would start playing, or complete freeze.

However, I believe this particular issues has been solved for a while. I’m not sure, because I instead opted for the Subtitles Extractor Plugin, which runs nightly and pre-fetches all the subtitles and stores them on the Jellyfin VM itself.

Where it was still noticeable though was if one of [Library Scan/Trick-play Extraction/Subtitle Extraction/Media Segment Scan] ran while playing an episode, the server would completely lock up.

Long story short: cable swapped, 1Gbit, all issues gone.

Sorry, but why not just fetch a single media file with multiple languages?

Can’t speak to that, I’m not involved. All I know is that,

• Jellyfin server gets significant upgrades in subtitle capabilities and performance,
• Jellyfin AdroidTV just released an RC that finally includes direct play for ASS/SSA subtitles,
• and on Monday, I FINALLY resolved a hardware issue (faulty cable) that made my Jellyfin almost unusable whenever ASS/SSA needed to be played (and only in that situation. Fun!)

So yeah, I don’t know or really care about leadership change, I just know it’s gonna run like a rocket now 😄

Are you sure you aren’t either applying nixpkgs overlays, or following master instead of nixos-unstable? I’ve not really experienced anything like you’ve described.

Anyways - I’ve additionally built my own cache server, which builds every output of my flake every time I push to main. System updates are ONLY downloads now. Also allowed all of my low-powered VMs to auto-update, since they’ll never need to build anything at all.
