they are entirely different contexts of communication. mastodon is a ‘microblog’ platform, where one person tends to broadcast to a group of subscribed users

lemmy is just forums with threaded discussion… many to many as it were.

personally, ive always generally hated the twittersphere (microblogging), and avoid it mostly. but it is nice being able to subscribe to the small number of microbloggers i do enjoy thanks to mbin’s built-in integration.

the hilarious bit is you could tax them at 100% over x and they will still be richer than you will ever be… because generational wealth is purposefully very hard to track, tax and really understand. the u.s. tax code was written for these people

i like to tell this at dinner parties, introduced as ‘the holocaust joke’

jewish guy, gets thrown into a concentration camp. spends years in there… somehow makes it through the entire war alive, saved by the americans at the very end. after the war he migrates to the united states, finds a bride and has a large family. he lives to a very ripe age of 99, and suddenly at his death, finds himself at the pearly gates of heaven.

the jewish man walks through the gates, down a long hall where he can just make out a looming figure at the end. he approaches god himself.

god looks down at the man and in a booming voice says “sir, that is not funny.”

i see 404s all the time on deleted threads/comments. when i look in my history i see stuff, when i attempt to click into it, it turns out that thing was moderated and deleted and shows a 404. the metadata technically still exists in places, but in others it is now inaccessible. and thats just my platform, which is not lemmy. every platform handles things slightly differently.

the protocols underlying the fediverse are largely… hmmm… more like guidelines than rules.

there are literally hundreds of different platforms/projects sending around activities with lemmy being only one of those interacting places. somtimes lemmy is just a relay for non-lemmy content. it can get very complicated.

and then add to this that server operators can modify their servers reactions to activities however they see fit. most users would use shit ‘out-of-the-box’, some heavily modify their source projects… for example, to ignore ‘delete’ requests to circumvent moderation.

if you think youre ever going to find the ‘correct’ vote count, youre expecting more accuracy from that metadata than it will ever provide from any source.
