  • I read comments like yours and always thought it was hyperbole, then I became a bioinformatics teacher.

    Not hyperbole. iOS and Android destroyed future generation’s ability to understand traditional computing.

    They can’t unzip a file, they can’t navigate a directory hierarchy deeper than one level, they can’t reply to an email without replying to all recipients.

    A class about BLAST had to become a class about how to install a program on Windows.


  • I settled down on the specific sweet spot I like, and accept no further.

    Small, digital, single purpose devices. I don’t go back to analog, but do not embrace smart devices, always on, surveillance, subscriptions, premium tiers, one year cycles.

    Digital FLAC player, wired headphones, digital watch, digital camera, portable emulator. All digital, all techie, all could have been in my backpack in 2007. Peaceful, functional, sometimes I buy lithium cells and replace the batteries.
