  • but it’s cheaper than Bigscreen Beyond, for example.

Not sure if you’re counting PC hardware cost or needed accessories, but the base pricing seems comparable especially Bigscreen being smaller+lighter+microOLED.

EDIT: Seeing now that the Bigscreen doesn’t include controllers, and the Valve Index controller setup recommended (Knuckles+multi-base-station) is a significant cost. I guess technically you could still do a lot with just head-tracking and other peripherals (and maybe even other VR controllers?) but I see the point especially at this cost level.

No camera either so head tracking is still an issue and passthrough doesn’t seem to be a possibility. So I guess without having anything else, it’d basically be a fancy monitor with eye-tracking. I’d say maybe one benefit would be ability to lie down, but this might be a quick way to get motion sickness depending on the content.

    try

    It costs money.

I tried something (‘multiplayer demo’, I suspect outdated/barebones export) and it has some neat stuff, the official demo doesn’t work though (Picotron Playground is resting.).

    more subjective

I’m really interested in 3-digit hex colors (12-bit-RGB) and it seems like something like this would use it. I’m working on my own palette that’s currently 49 colors (7x7) so I guess it would fit here as its own palette or maybe even in the 32 empty slots with some reworking.

That said, I’m not big on the pixel (or even rectilinear voxel) workflow/aesthetic though (more for polygons, 2D and 3D) though I know that probably eliminates most options.

  • To me it seems like the VR market might have a high-end foothold but otherwise seems like a “try again in 30 years” for the general market (so, slightly better than 3D TV’s fate). Which isn’t really Valve-specific.

Though I’d also say <top level comment> is uncharitable way to frame it, the headline reminds me of the free PC codes for Portal 2 with Co-op crossplay early on in the Steam days. Though I’m sure AI-market-induced cost increase is a big part of it so apology actually isn’t a bad way to put it, without ‘failure’ factoring in.

It’s absolutely true. And that my outdated Arch system is likely still more fresh than Debian.

That said yeah I would like something that can update itself whenever without breaking*, certainly if it expects me to update frequently. And manual interventions (ideally used for things that actually have a choice/fix, not just what ends up being a pasted command or two) should be a warn-step/update-blocker (depending on situation).

Though what the image is probably about (2025-12-20, nVidia 10-series turned legacy, legacy driver put onto AUR) is a bad situation in its own right particularly later when the AUR issues started happening. And it is really an update-or-don’t (or get an AMD card somehow) issue.

Other distros likely do solve the issue of updating, though from what I can see aren’t as good with packaging (dependency handling, lacking optional dependencies) and package availability. Which can be worked around somewhat too, but still needs more trial/input.

Annoyances are also multiplied for me by having non-fiber internet (also shared).

    * TBC I also mean the act of updating itself (outdated keys etc), not just the outcome

  • this year

And one post earlier (2025-12-20) that the image likely could be about:

NVIDIA 590 driver drops Pascal and lower support

    Install nvidia-580xx-dkms from the AUR

Impact: Updating the NVIDIA packages [without manually changing to AUR packages] on systems with Pascal, Maxwell, or older cards will fail to load the driver, which may result in a broken graphical environment.

I understand perfectly but it doesn’t make sense. It’s simple, non-intuitive math and I can see 2 answers and it probably is one of those. Hopefully that’s all I need to know, but I won’t find out right now.

Or maybe it’s (the missile knows)… “the triangle knows where_it_is at all times. It knows this because it knows where_it_is-not. By subtracting where_it_is from where_it_is-not…”
