I’m a systems librarian in an academic library. I moved over the Lemmy after Rexxit 2023. I’ve had an account on sdf.org since 2009 (under a different username), and so I chose this instance out of a sense of nostalgia. I do all sorts of fiber arts (knitting, cross stitch, sewing) and love dogs.

  • I appreciate the suggestions, but last I heard we were looking at the sort of basic battery-operated doorbell you install using 3m strips at your 1890s triple-decker college apartment, no camera or anything half as fancy. I’d be happy with a door knocker (low tech and reliable) if the HOA wouldn’t have kittens.

(I know, I know, HOA, but the condo is so much cheaper than renting, and shared governance makes sense when you share a roof.)

  • I have a ring camera. It came with the townhouse and it sucks. We’re considering replacing it because it doesn’t even consistently work as a door bell because either we keep needing to charge it or it’s on too crowded a wireless band, not sure which.

Did you know you have to subscribe to even record videos? Screw that.

Also the privacy concerns, but that ship has sailed in my particular case because both my nextdoor neighbors have ring cameras, as well as at least 3 units across the street.

  • Lady in front of me at the checkout line took forever, had very precise ideas of how things should be bagged, waited until the end of the transaction to pull up the store’s app, was upset she couldn’t use X, Y, or Z discount, in general made it all take much longer than it should. I kid you not it took her 20 minutes to check out. (I would have moved lines, except I’d already unloaded my cart and it kept looking like she was almost done.)

She ended with a schpiel about how sometimes it’s good to take a break, slow down, we don’t have anything to rush for.

At this point, I pulled out my phone and showed the clerk “here’s my pup waiting for me at home”. She seemed appreciative of a distraction/someone recognizing the absurdity of the first person, so I told her about my pup and was pointedly cheerful about seeing him soon.

  • I was at a conference for librarians and I had a great time. Venders loaded me down with swag (books, totes, stickers, pens, chopsticks) and I attended several eye-opening sessions. We might implement a Library of Things at my library, I’m looking into a vender that simplifies statistics-gathering and -presentation, and I’m generally happy seeing all my fellow library folks.

  • So you’re saying this might all be because of AI (which found the security flaw in PHP, which caused the maintenance, which happened sometime around when the server went down). Sounds fair to me.

💕 Seriously, thanks for the update and I know sysadmining can be a stressy job. Take care of yourself.
