Inkscape has a function called live trace that will identify the borders and make a series of vector objects. Then you can just delete the ones that you don’t want.

I saw a post on a forum for fantasy maps where a guy would photograph puddles in a parking lot and use those as a starting point for island maps.

There is a site called Digg, IIRC it’s only tangentially related to the original Digg though. I read a year or two ago that someone had bought the name and was making a new site that would function very differently from the original.
