There are some original Trek scripts still around on the internet and this is how Kirk’s dialogue was written from the very first. I don’t see what else he was expected to do with it.

Aw I liked V, I think a lot of its issues were caused by the studio. “What does God need with a ship?” is easily the most Captain Kirk line in all of Trekdom.
