These things do happen. I read an article less than a year ago about a lady who pretended to be a nurse and worked in a hospital for quite a while. She was only discovered when she was going to be promoted and they realized she wasn’t certified.

The CIA and international criminals use identify brokers to disappear. There are organized criminal groups that will create a fake identity and cultivate it to adulthood—opening bank accounts, renting apartments, and taking on fake jobs to produce a fully functional blank identity with a history that can be verified. Then, they sell that identity to the highest bidder.

The only reason they can’t be pirated is that they are difficult to produce and often case specific. Nobody is going to do all that work for free, and it requires you to either be willing to take the risk yourself, or to have the money and connections for an experienced criminal to do years of work for you.

Piracy is piracy because copies can be reused indefinitely without significant further cost to the person sharing it. If uploading Shrek took 18 years of work and cost 100k+ for a single use, it wouldn’t be widely available either.

I could, but it’s more convenient for me to have it served up by an LXC container on the server. I’m usually interacting with things on a laptop or a phone, so it’s just easy being able to have a tab open with my wiki served through Tailscale, and ProxMox makes sure it stays backed up to an external drive and the cloud so I don’t lose anything.

The few times I’ve had a critical error with ProxMox, it’s been super simple to do a fresh install and just restore my daily backup.

There are many ways it could be done, but this way has been mine, and it’s worked for me.

I used to be bare metal Debian, but I moved to ProxMox for a few reasons.

1. Backup and restore is a breeze, and the UI makes things human friendly.
2. It makes it easier to separate my wiki notes in an LXC so that I can still see them if I’m doing maintenance on my main server VM that requires restarts.
3. There is essentially no noticeable performance reduction.

It works, it’s easy, and the simplicity has saved my butt a few times. I don’t think I’ll be switching, and I’d recommend it to anyone running a homelab. I still use docker to manage most of my services inside a VM.

It’s not about resources, it’s about the resistance from the opposition. I think if they try to do everything at once, they’ll find a war on all sides from the republicans, but if they can focus their energy, they might stand a chance of getting something done.

Maybe they could do it or maybe they couldn’t, but the infighting about it would be insane. You’d have representatives talking about how it’s a waste of taxpayer money, others would say it is healing, if a republican president got elected next, they might just build it again.

Instead of the first person in office just deleting these 4 years physically, I’d much rather see them spend their energy to address reforms that would keep another bad actor like Trump from getting elected again.

Then, once we’ve closed the loopholes, money faucets, and propaganda machines, another well reasoned president down the line can work on the demolition project.

I hear you, I went through the same journey. After getting Immich set up, I haven’t had to do a single thing to it. There are scripts that can turn your folders into Immich albums, so I just set up the docker containers, ran the script, and watched as everything was created for me without more labor on my part.

I hope somebody else has the solution you’re looking for, but if you don’t find it, I really think you should give it a whirl because it turned out to be way easier than I expected it to be.

Immich works really well. Don’t fear the database. Docker makes it all super easy too.

I’ve been on them before, and unfortunately they don’t have that effect for me. They made me a little zombified, honestly, but I imagine it depends a lot on your biology.

As we saw with Beto, you have to tread lightly in this state. Beto was doing just fine until he mentioned taking people’s guns, which is a cardinal Texas sin, and he paid the price for it.
