“A lot on your plate” can be taken metaphorically to mean a lot of stressful things in your life. Stress can cause obesity. So both meanings of the phrase can equally cause fatness
Personally, I just try to minimize things. Cutting things out wholesale is far too much effort for me. If I can, I’ll get the veggi option, unless I’m craving something specific, then I won’t stress about it too much. As long as I’m trying, thats still better than most people do
