That was fun! And a reminder that laws, not the market fix stuff like that. smiles in European
Thanks for the details. Still good and saving fossil fuels.
Well the hate part is to be expected. With all the prejudice and hate ingrained in the training data it would have to be very well prompted to reduce the chances of two steps to mecha-hitler. And thinking about what I hear about American congregations across the pond, I don’t have much hope that they’d care.

As a late adopter: That’s why I did it. And I found out that I like how they feel too!
There still are these fantastic nuggets of unexpected knowledge in the internet! Thanks, friend! I still feel sick though…

That’s why revolutionary communication should be low tech and on a need to know basis. Or so I‘ve heard.
Sadly I know about that. (As another comment: Sometimes you hear that these unethical experiments gave humanity insights that have been valuable. But at least in general that is not true, not lastly because it was shit science by shit scientists to begin with. )
I just don’t know the extent of these things being known in WWII Japan. I would assume it was similar to Germany but for Germany I have read enough to know it for sure that it has been known at the time and not just for a chosen few.
And adding to that: People saw what happened to their Jewish/Romani/Disabled/Communist/Queer neighbors. They worked in the clinics where disabled children were selected and sterilized or (sent off to be) killed, knew the police men who rounded up homeless people etc. And people came back from concentration camps as well. Some people did time there for ordinary crimes. German citizens incarcerated in concentration camps even had to pay for social security while incarcerated, so that their insurance history wasn’t broken afterwards.
I don’t know about specific programs like Unit 731. But in general: People wrote letters. People came home and talked to their spouses. Concerning the Germans: A lot of people were involved. The Einsatzgruppen were staffed by ordinary police. The Waffen SS fought alongside the ordinary Wehrmacht which had their ugly share of atrocities. All these people wrote and came home and talked. And the concentration camps on German home soil were not isolated. People saw what happened there. People worked there as civilians. People who say the general public didn’t know are lying.

Not really thinking about the long term… Especially after WW II lots and lots of all kinds of ammunition has been dumped in all kinds of bodies of water. And today? That nice peace of amber you found at the shore of the Baltic Sea? Might be white phosphorus and will burn a hole in your pocket and then your leg. That lake you dumped all your stuff in and then „sealed“ with concrete? It is now a generational cleanup project, where the country road a few hundred meters away has to be closed for a few hours everyday, to avoid the smallest of shocks when handling your newest find in the low pressure tent you’ve built on top of that site where you dig up everything shovel by shovel. That nice forest next to the barracks? You shouldn’t go there for the next few generations, if you don’t like cancer. But hey, just dump everything in the water, what could go wrong? [edit: typo]

Yes, I volunteer regularly in Germany. It works just fine and is fully paper based.
