In the Star Trek universe transporters were invented in 2124. The grandparents wouldn’t have been alive to vote for Trump, unless there is another Trump in Star Trek canon I dont know about.
This was 1995; sexuality was a “new” topic. Identifying as anything other than straight could literally cost you your life. It was 2 years before Ellen would come out publicly on TV because she feared losing her show and 3 years before Matthew Shepard was tortured and dragged to death for being gay.
A lot of boomers believed and probably still believe that being bisexual was the lazy way of not making a choice. The 90s are pretty romanticized now but it was a scary time for a lot of LGBTIA+ folks.
