Hey all,
I’m looking for two different testing tools. The first I kind of have an idea about already.
I want a USB cable tester that doesn’t require an external power source and preferably has its own rechargeable battery. I’m looking for it to be able to identify PD capabilities, power only, power and data, display transfer, the works. Basically I’d like to plug in a USB and get a reading of all the features and aspects of the cable. I’ve found the Treedix cable tester that I think can do all this? I’m not sure if it can tell me if the USB can transfer video as well as data/power though. This also doesn’t have an internal rechargeable battery but I can always put in my own. Does anyone have a batter option?
The second thing I’m looking for is an Ethernet cable tester. This one I’m having trouble finding and it’s specifically that I’m looking for a speed test with it. I have cables going through my walls at home and would like to test not only connectivity and fault detection, but also a does test. So this would have to be a tester that I can plug a cable into as well as a make plug so I can plug the tester into the wall. Does anyone know of anything like this?
Thanks!
The treedix tells you if it can do thunderbolt, and if it can do thunderbolt it can do video. It also has a pin connection testing so if it’s a usb 3+ cable and it has all the pins it should do video. Google also says any 10gbit cable should do video.
#2 is going to be some extremely expensive professional grade gear. You can just get 2 10 gig capable devices and try running an iperf test between them for probably less money. My friend worked for Spectrum and they had a device that did that for $20,000. I’m sure a cheaper device could do it, but two 10 gig capable usb dongles and two devices you already own are probably cheaper. The devices that check that the pins are connected are dirt cheap, but if you want to see what those wires are capable of then good luck.
Awesome, thanks!
And holy crap that’s not even in the realm of what I was thinking for price lol. I think you’re right, I’ll just stick with some more adhoc designs. Hell, if I could get ahold of some pis I might be able to make something suitable.
