Okay first of all i read the whole article and still didnt undertsand what sign stealing was cause it never really explained it but also why is it not allowed? In waterpolo or volleyball(two sports i have played on high enough level to know) its just called having a shitty system of communicating. You need to account for your opponents stufying your plays and often, especially so in waterpolo, there will be a player on the opposing team that will understand your language even if youre from different countries. It seems like such an arbitrary rule.

Because in normal play it’s very hard or impossible to do. The batter is facing away from the catcher, who is the one signaling. Now that there are more high-tech ways to do it (telephoto lens cameras, ways to communicate things to the batter, etc) it’s just become a much bigger problem. A properly hidden signal would be visible to 2nd and maybe 1st/3rd bases, and the players there would have a harder time seeing and communicating signals. Nowadays, someone with a high-powered camera and a radio in the bleachers behind center field can see and relay things to team members and coaches with extreme ease. And past success doing it has only emboldened people

Ahh lol in waterpolo we used to do shenanigans. One time our coach got a red card which basically means he cant be coach for the rest of the match or the next one or two matches depending on many factors, in other words he has to leave the play area and watch from the spectator stands. Now his reaction was to pull out the walkie talkie he had bought a few years back and speak to our substitute golie through it 💀. I swear the shit this man pulled sometimes. For context we were like top 8 youth teams in all of hungary, our peak was 3rd place in under 18s(tho that was before my time) and this guy had to have a breathalizer on him at all points to check if anyone from the team came drunk or with a hangover before matches. So yeah thats how it works in eastern europe i guess, to be fair our waterpolo team is better even tho yall have 40 times as many people so i guess it works /s
