People get used to assuming other people are dumber than them, especially online. So they see an obvious joke and instead if thinking “well obviously they didn’t mean the thing they are pointing out, so they are pointing it out to mock that perspective”, they just accept it face value, and then when called out on it go “poe’s law” or argue that the fact that they didn’t understand says a lot about society instead of doing any introspection.
