I just started watching TNG (abd DS9)

I have a new theory: Picard wasn’t that great, but when Riker arrives Picard tells him he needs to help the captain project an air of geniality, especially to children.

We know after Enterprise the show is actually Riker’s holodeck simulation, so how do we not know that he’s whitewashed the heck out of Picard’s legacy?

Are you saying that the ENT finale implies that what we see of TNG was just a long holodeck recreation? I have heard the theory that ENT is just the holodeck, but TNG being the holodeck as well is new to me.

Not necessarily a holodeck program, but one could argue that what we’re watching is a recreation of events based on logs/reports that are rife with bias and exaggeration.

Not that I had considered, just extrapolating from the top comment an idea I’d previously run across.

you know what, i’ve just decided my favorite bullshit explanation for a season or series existing is now “it was all Q fucking with [Picard/the timeline/Janeway/Picard again/humanity/punched in the face]”

The Great Bird’s introduction to the TMP novelization makes it clear that the original show, and presumably all the later ones, are just dramatizations of real events. Jim Kirk signed off on the novelization, so it’s a much more accurate depiction.

So the popular conception that live action is canon and novels are apocryphal is backwards.
