The best situation is when you don’t need a car to simply exist. That should be the norm, not the exception.
In the Netherlands I would switch to bike. Here (kraut), not so much. And public transport is a nasty nightmare. Nah, car it is!

Cities built around companies are also an exception, yes.
With company towns there are real risks that when that company disappears, that town will also. Just looks at what happened in the US, in Appalachia.
