It was a widely used encryption tool, that was suddenly dropped with the message " not safe, use something else".
I vote for “forced to add a backdoor and decided to drop the whole thing publicly.”
VeraCrypt is the new fork. It has been audited, and officially endorsed by the French government (which means that they are encouraged to use it, whatever that means). It’s still open-source.
