It is common in Germany to put cheese on bread. Or do you mean he ate just cheese?
Cheese on bread yes IIRC. The cultural shock was that he ate it at 9 AM. But he was a great guy like every other Germans I have met so far.
Also they have invented techno music, weird movies, the Chaos Computer Club, etc.
