I read the article hoping for an answer to my question, but alas. So, Lemmy, what about all the amniotic fluid that was lost when the mom was opened up?? Does it just replenish? Also, I thought babies “breathed” the fluid until they first feel air, so how did that mechanism not get toggled?

Amazing story, though. Thanks for sharing!

Yes the amniotic fluid replenishes. So much so that my wife had to have some removed twice during her pregnancy with our youngest. The way they do that is exactly how you’d think. They stick a really long needle through your stomach and drain it. Fun times. I just had to watch and hold my wife’s hand but I’d just as soon never witnesses something like that again.

Good question! I don’t know most of the answer, but in general, amniotic fluid does get replenished, like other fluids in your body. There’s examples of women leaking fluid and kept on bed rest as long as the fetus doesn’t seem in distress, bc even a leaking uterus is the best incubator for it to mature in.
