a website to help students visualize the electromagnetic field
I’ve been building this simulator as a side project aimed to help students understand and visualize electromagnetic phenomena such as radiation, near field effects, polarization, wave interference and diffraction.
You can:
- place multiple, diffrent radiation sources and set their parameters (geometery, amplitude, phase and more)
- place perefect wire conductors, PEC plane and poke slots in the plane to create diffraction patterns
- observe the electric field, magnetic field, energy flow field, energy density or radiation pattern
- zoom in and out and translate the canvas
- change the simulation resolution, frequency and propogation speed and some other parameters
I hope someone might find it useful and I’d love to hear what people think :)
What do you think I should add?

very cool. it was immediately educational.
a couple notes:
- it barely runs on my new phone so perhaps some compromises for mobile would be best.
- still working on absorptive materials besides PEC plane? where are the things that would cast a radiation shadow?
Thanks!
Well that’s disappointing, i really tried optimizing it and it worked well on the few devices I tested (I have an iPhone 13 Pro that handles it well). I will see what I can do to make it more smooth.
And yes I am working on adding different kind of pec obstacles, dialectic materials and ohmic conductive materials.
The challenge is to keep the solver cheap while preserving reasonable accuracy.
May I ask what phone do you have ?
Thanks for the feedback:)
it still started snappy and ran, just noticeably slower as I added elements. its a pixel 10 pro but running graphene and vanadium browser…a rare client for sure but shouldn’t be different than chrome on Android
Got it, thanks for the heads up
