People in Lemmy are still people, I don’t think you got banned off of reddit for “'absolutely no reason” my guess is that you said something (doesn’t matter if the take/comment you put on reddit was or wasn’t good/proper) that pissed someone off and they banned you.
I wouldn’t venture to think Lemmy is thaaaaaat different from reddit in the sense that every single user will be reasonable, level headed and open to civil discussion on here. From what I read from other users, it is still possible to get banned “for no reason” on Lemmy too.

What a way to dodge adressing what I said lol… Proving my point

Straw man now lol, I point out you engaged in an ad hominem fallacy and you call me a victim cause that’s way easier for you than to adress that I called you out on using flawed logic, that’t not a response to the point I made, again, the age of my account is not a factor in what I choose to say about a topic, it’s like saying you can’t have an opinion on abortion because you are not a woman, or an opinion on public universities because you went to a private one.

Or are you gonna argue that it’s somehow “wrong” to not want a really cool new thing you found to prosper in the best way possible? I’m not the boss of anyone, not buiding up any cults or gathering followers of any kind to follow my orders, I’m just a guy, sharing his thoughts on something, and asking more experienced people on their thoughts… If you think that’s a bad thing…

It’s nice of you to try and get an ego boost out of me (shouldn’t even need to tell you, but, Ad Hominem? really? The age of my account doesn’t have anything to do with what I say)
But go ahead, point out where in my post I said anything about telling other people what to do? My post was made out of curiosity of what other people thought about this, framed as a question, and showcasing some of my preliminary thoughts about both options, if you can find a place in my post where I tell others how they should run Lemmy I’ll apologize, I don’t have any issues with apologizing, hell, I’ll take down the post even.
If not, stfu, you’re just being an ass for literally no reason, if you can’t point it out, then you are just talking shit, and it seems that in your looong history of this account (9months on Lemmy) you didn’t even learn how to construct a proper argument.

Dude, don’t give them any ideas. Butt plugs are gonna start having ads before they turn on now.

Nice take, I can see how that could end up being a problem

I’m a bit lazy to go and find it rn but I did put my own PERSONAL way of how I understand/use the term in a reply to another comment in this post, not saying I hold the stick of truth over anyone else, and im not trying to enforce any kind of action, I asked cause I like to think about things, and I thought id be better for me to listen to other people’s perspectives before “picking a side” so to speak, I have some preliminary ideas about what I think about the topic but nothing is set in stone really.
- SlayersFan@lemmy.worldOPtoAsk Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do we really want Lemmy's userbase to grow and assimilate "normies"?11·6 days ago
You didn’t get it wrong at all, that was the intent behind it, that not all people are healthy for a community, this wouldn’t be ALL “normies” though, but a subset of them (disruptive people), you probably have met quite a few of those in mainstream social media.
And while not all of them are “normies”, there’s been a long history of outsiders getting into geek groups and then either shaming or criticizing the hobbies of nerdy/geeky people due to “not getting it”, I do think you should exclude certain people from certain communities, like for example, not allowing child molesters and neo-nazis to hang around.

I mean, yes? This statement as well, and this can be expanded to any variation of it that makes a judgment based on a personal characteristic instead of engaging with the argument, it’s basic logic.
There are two options, either you don’t know logic, or you do, and therefore you are aware you are engaging in a logical fallacy of your own, basically being an asshole for kicks.

Sorry, I think I made a mistake there, I didn’t mean advertising like running ads, but mouth to mouth, basically yapping about lemmy to a bunch of the people you know/chat to if other social media, like a shotgun approach to see if anyone ends up here after you talk to a ton of people.

warm fuzzy words right there, made my night better, hope it pans out well

Sorry to get to your message this late, for some reason I missed this notification, yes, my account it less than a week old, (Ad Hominem, I don’t think the age of my account has anything to do with whatever I say, you should engage with what I’m saying instead of going after my personal characteristics like how old my account is)
I’m trying to find the place in my post where I opened a discussion about changing anything, and I don’t seem to be able to find the spot, so please let me know if I’m missing anything. I said I’m enjoying Lemmy, what I PERSONALLY would like to happen to Lemmy, then questions to try and learn from more seasoned users in the site about what they thing the site should be like, if it should grow or not, and what types of people if any should we try not to include.
I don’t see any place where a fixed position is set like: “We ought to do X”, I just see questions for both sides of the argument in the post I sent, for Lemmy to grow/Stay on the smaller side etc…
But please let me know if there’s anything wrong or off about what I said, without using a logical fallacy. If I have, I have no issues retracting/revising what I said/apologizing.

Yeah, this scares the shit out of me to be honest, the enshittification seems to end up getting everyone in the end.
I just hope we get to enjoy this for a while, or maybe i’ll be like linux, taking a small chunk out of desktop, a good alternative but not that big that it is constantly threatened (im sure people wanna take linux down, but they would be way more aggressive if linux had 50% of the Desktop share of the market)

“Normie” Is a loose definition, but my personal definition would combine a few things:
- Mainstream interests without too much depth (likes what’s trending right now and follows what most people do/like for hobbies, but doesn’t dive deep in any topic)
- Lack of willingness to go out of their way to set things up, no matter how simple they might be, they just rather have something that requires 0 effort/thought.
- Lack of critical thinking skills (Debating usually but not always, ends up in “I FEEL this way therefore it’s right”, tons of logical fallacies, and then they get angry if you point those out, arguing for them its more about being loud/disrespecting the other person than using sound logic)
I find people who are not in this group, usually have some interest in a topic in which they do read on it/dive deeper into it, even if it pisses them off, they can set up things because they understand the value on it, and I feel these types of people (usually) end up being better conversation when it comes to arguing about something, they will try and convince you using some type of logic other than “im right you’re wrong”.
Not a 1to1 with what you’ll probably find in other places when it comes to defining the term, this is just how I personally see it.

I had to go look it up, nice trivia. And yea, that’s similar to what I was thinking, that something like that could end up happening

Fair point, might invite a few more people then!
